Black Obsidian Origin and Lore

Obsidian has a long and varied history dating back to the Acheulean age. The name Obsidian is derived from the Roman Explorer Obsidius who discovered it in Ethiopia.
In ancient Mexican culture, Obsidian was highly prised for its use in tool making. It fragments with extremely sharp edges and makes excellent cutting blades. It was used for weapons and everyday tools. It was known as Itzli which translates to ‘God of Stone’.
The Aztecs used highly polished Obsidian to make scrying mirrors to prophesize the future. Obsidian was such an important commodity and was valued higher than gold.
